Super Mario vs Sackboy

27 September 2008

By DEREK BROWN

STAND aside Super Mario and Sonic The Hedgehog –— this is Sackboy . . . and he is about to become a worldwide celebrity.

The little cloth man is being pushed by video games giant Sony as their defining mascot for the Noughties — and he’s British.

The Japanese computer giants, who are pumping millions into the character, reckon every kid in the world will want their own virtual one in the next few months.

Sackboy was created by tiny firm Media Molecule, which operates with just 25 staff in Guildford, Surrey.

He will be released worldwide in the game Little Big Planet on the PlayStation 3 next month.

The title has set the internet abuzz because it is a cross between platform gaming and the sort of social networking seen on sites like MySpace.

Players start with a “naked” Sackboy who they can customise in different clothes.

They then meet friends online and either create their own worlds or play in ones created by other people.

Girls will have their own version — unsurprisingly called Sackgirl.

PlayStation reckon that in months the game’s community will have easily outnumbered online worlds such as Second Life.

Sony PlayStation’s Jonathan Fargher told The Sun: “It’s fair to say that Nintendo has got Super Mario and Sega had Sonic.

“It’s about time Sony got their own iconic mascot — Sackboy will be that character.

“He’s a charming and personable character people will take to and the fact you can dress him up how you like will appeal.

“You’ll be able to make him a spaceman, pirate, cowboy, zombie — there’s even an Evel Knievel outfit for him.”

The emphasis of Little Big Planet, the biggest PS3 release yet, is on design and customisation.

The company have even made a Sun-themed level you can download.

It features our famous double-decker bus plus London landmarks.

The release will be backed up by worldwide Sackboy merchandise and small dolls of the iconic figure are being produced.

The head of Media Molecule, Mark Healey, was approached three years ago by senior Sony executives desperate to snap up exclusive rights for using Sackboy.

Mario, one of the planet’s most recognisable figures, has made Sony rival Nintendo billions.

Let battle commence . . .

PSX Extreme: Bayonetta Preview
PSX Extreme writes: "Fast paced action games such as Devil May Cry have become all the rage in gaming today. If your game's got guns and/or swords set in a fantasy world, it better damn well play like Capcom's Devil May Cry. Bayonetta is one game in development that has all three aforementioned qualities that made DMC so popular...no, scratch that, it has four. The fourth quality being Hideki Kamiya, the creator of the first Devil May Cry game

PSX Extreme: Fat Princess Preview
PSX Extreme writes: "The creation of a downloadable platform for the PlayStation 3 has brought us some games that we normally wouldn't see, as publishers would often oppose slapping a simplistic 300MB game onto a 25GB medium. HD remakes like Puzzle Fighter and Street Fighter are less likely to arrive, as are games like Fat Princess.

Rock Band 2 for Wii to Feature DLC
